Farming is a type of skill that is mainly used for Brewing. Farming requires seeds to plant, and upon harvest, gives specific ingredients. Once the Broken Rake is obtained from Gathering within the Desert Mines and is fixed, the player is able to receive seeds at a certain rate, which increases after slotting Gem onto the Rake.
Seeds typically have a minimum level to plant them and mature after a set grow time. Some plants may die when they mature unless the farmer has reached a higher threshold level. The chance of all plants dying without the appropriate farming level is 1 in 7 (~14%). For example, dotted leaf seeds can be grown from level 1 but until the player reaches level 15 the plant has a chance of dying. Plants that die yield no resources or xp. Some plants such as mushrooms, vegetables and flowers never die when planted.
At 70 Gathering, it is possible to loot the Watering Can from Forever Fields which can be used to drastically increase plant growth speeds.
Bonemeal is needed to plant higher level seeds. Player must craft the Bonemeal bin in the Crafting section in order to convert Bones to Bonemeal.
Basic Seeds
These are basic seeds that you can grow from the start of the game. When planted, basic seeds never die.
Mushroom plants when harvested give 20 to 30 mushrooms. Stardust seeds give ??? to ??? stardust.

Leaf Seeds
Leaf seeds are gained passively using the Rake, by gathering in the Forever Fields and by combat in the Forest and Blood Forest.
Leaf seeds give 3 to 6 leaves when harvested. The medium farming achievement and the nature path criptoe perk both raise this by 2 giving a maximum of 7 to 10 leaves.

Tree Seeds
Tree seeds are gained by chopping trees using the woodcutting skill. All trees require bonmeal to grow.
Trees are an excellent source of farming experience.

Vegetable Seeds
Vegetable seeds are unlocked by the trowel tool which allows seeds to be gained passively at a slow rate. The vegetables they grow are used for cooking shakes. When planted, vegetable seeds never die.

Flower Seeds
Flower seeds are obtained by inserting other seeds into the birdhouse. It is possible to craft the birdhouse at level 50 Farming and level 53 Crafting.
Flowers that are harvested from flower seeds can be put into the beehive to create brewing xp potions. When planted, flower seeds never die.

Mega Seeds
Mega seeds grow around 40% of the regular amount of a normal seed, multiplied by 100. With the T5 nature perk from Criptoe, this is doubled to about 80%. They can also regrow via the blue farming orb.

Farming Output Averages
When determining the output from any type of seed there are a few different factors in play. This is because crop types have different base output ranges and all of the output modifiers need to be considered. Here is a breakdown of the output modifiers.
Modifiers:
- Medium Farming Perk increases leaves output range by 2
- Criptoe Nature Tier 2 Perk increases leaves output range by 2
- Blue Farming Orb gives a 10% chance for leaves to regrow. This is a (1 / 0.9) = 11.111...% modifier to leaf output. This is not just a flat 10% increase in output as regrow chance is applied to regrows as well.
- The Base Shiny Ball gives a 1% chance to turn any Farming Seed to a Shiny seed. This increases its output by 10x
- The Mega Shiny Ball gives all Shiny seeds a 1% chance to become a Mega Shiny. This increases its output by 50x. The Mega Shiny Ball with only the Base Shiny Ball means that a Shiny has a 0.99% chance to occur and a Mega Shiny 0.01% chance to occur.
- The Mega Shiny+ Ball (Sea Glass upgrade from the submarine) doubles the shiny chance to 1.98% which in turn increases the mega shiny chance to 0.02%
The base output of the farming seed also matters. The output average is the product (multiplication) of the modifier and the average base output.
Because they aren't stated elsewhere: For mushrooms the base output is 20 to 30. So an average of 25
For Leaf Seeds the base output is 3 to 6. So an average of 4.5. With Medium Farming this range is 5-8 with an average of 6.5 and with both medium farming and Criptoe Nature Tier 2 it is 7-10 with an average of 8.5.
The below table gives the output modifiers to the common combinations you can have of the modifiers.
Modifiers | Modifier |
---|---|
10% Regrow (Blue Orb) for leaves | 1.111... |
Base Shiny Ball | 1.09 |
Blue Orb and Base Shiny Ball for leaves | 1.211... |
Base and Mega Shiny Balls | 1.094 |
Blue Orb, Base and Mega Shiny Balls for leaves | 1.216 |
Base, Mega and Mega+ Balls | 1.188 |
Blue Orb, Base, Mega and Mega+ Balls for leaves | 1.320 |
Examples:
Using the best modifier possible the maximum average of mushrooms is 29.7. Math: 25 * 1.188 = 29.7
Using the best modifier possible the maximum average of leaf seeds is 11.22 Math: 8.5 * 1.32 = 1.22
Using the best modifier possible the maximum average of a Potato seed is 19.8 Math: 15 * 1.188 = 17.82
Lastly, these modifiers do also affect leaf Mega Seeds as well. As in, they can regrow and become shiny.
